I'm very impressed with Maiskij, it formed beautiful bulbs its very first year with me. Bright purple stripes running vertically all around the circumference and a mellow Turban flavor.
I've read both that it's from Turkmenistan, and here that it's the Russian word for "May"- possibly its traditional harvest month. In this area, like all Turbans, it is harvested earlier than other garlic- but not that early, in my experience.
In the first photo you can see a single/round which some of the smaller cloves or larger bulbils may form.
